Indicator

% of supported schools with functional, sex-segregated and disability-accessible WASH facilities

Definition & calculation

Numerator: Number of supported schools where drinking water, sex-segregated latrines with menstrual hygiene provision, and handwashing facilities are functional, sufficient for enrolment, and accessible to children with disabilities

Denominator: Total number of supported schools assessed

Each supported school is assessed against agreed WASH-in-schools standards (safe water, adequate sex-segregated latrines, functional handwashing), and schools meeting all criteria are divided by all schools assessed.

Formula: (Numerator ÷ Denominator) × 100

Means of verification

School WASH facility assessment/checklist; monitoring visit reports

Interpretation

Direction: Higher is better

Typical reporting frequency: Monthly or quarterly

Guidance & common pitfalls

Assess functionality and sufficiency (e.g. pupil-to-latrine ratios) rather than mere presence; sex-segregation and accessibility are essential for the safe participation of girls and children with disabilities. Distinguish from a broader learning-space safety and protection standard.

This library is a curated reference to adapt, aligned generically with recognised humanitarian frameworks (Sphere, cluster registries, IASC, CHS and others). It is not an official indicator registry — always use the exact indicator definitions your donor or cluster requires.
