Indicator

% of enrolled learners retained through the end of the school term or cycle

Definition & calculation

Numerator: Number of learners enrolled at the start of the term/cycle who remain enrolled and attending at the end of it

Denominator: Number of learners enrolled at the start of the term/cycle, adjusted for verified transfers

Divide learners retained to the end of the cycle by those enrolled at the start (net of documented transfers), then multiply by 100.

Formula: (Numerator ÷ Denominator) × 100

Means of verification

Enrolment and attendance registers compared at two time points, dropout tracking records

Interpretation

Direction: Higher is better

Typical reporting frequency: Baseline, midline and endline (or annual)

Guidance & common pitfalls

Distinguish dropout from transfer or seasonal migration to avoid overstating attrition. Retention is a key equity signal, as girls and children with disabilities often drop out at higher rates.

This library is a curated reference to adapt, aligned generically with recognised humanitarian frameworks (Sphere, cluster registries, IASC, CHS and others). It is not an official indicator registry — always use the exact indicator definitions your donor or cluster requires.
