Indicator

% of households with access to and use of sufficient soap and essential hygiene items

Definition & calculation

Numerator: Number of sampled households with an observed adequate supply of soap and essential hygiene items at time of visit

Denominator: Total number of sampled households

Verify through household observation the presence of soap and agreed essential hygiene items in adequate quantity, expressed as a proportion of households sampled.

Formula: (Numerator ÷ Denominator) × 100

Means of verification

Post-distribution monitoring, household survey with observation

Interpretation

Direction: Higher is better

Typical reporting frequency: Baseline, midline and endline (or annual)

Guidance & common pitfalls

Verify by observation rather than distribution counts, since items may be sold, shared or used up; the standard is availability and use, not one-off receipt.

This library is a curated reference to adapt, aligned generically with recognised humanitarian frameworks (Sphere, cluster registries, IASC, CHS and others). It is not an official indicator registry — always use the exact indicator definitions your donor or cluster requires.
